Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Fellow to join the Language Neuroscience Laboratory at the University of Queensland.

The successful applicant will play a key role on an NIH-funded research project on the functional reorganisation of language processing in individuals with post-stroke aphasia, under the mentorship of Stephen M. Wilson, PhD.

Our research is focused on investigating the neural basis of language function, understanding how language breaks down in patients with different kinds of aphasia, and identifying neural changes that can support recovery over time.

You will have the opportunity to lead analyses of an exceptional longitudinal dataset comprising functional MRI, structural MRI, and behavioural data from hundreds of individuals recovering from aphasia after stroke.

You will play a key role in carrying out planned analyses of this dataset, as well as helping to shape future data collection.

You will also be expected and encouraged to design and implement your own innovative analyses, to help shape future data collection, and to develop your independence as a researcher.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Research: Establish a research program, collaborate on research projects, seek and manage research funding, publish in reputable journals, utilize best practice research methodologies, and participate in project discussions.
  • Teaching: Contribute to a limited amount of coursework teaching, as appropriate.
  • Supervision and Researcher Development: Contribute to the effective supervision of research assistants, Honours and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate).
  • Citizenship and Service: Develop partnerships, engage in internal service roles and committees, perform administrative functions, provide support to colleagues, and uphold university values.

This is a research-focused position. Further information can be found by viewing UQ’s Criteria for Academic Performance.

About you

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Ph.D. in a relevant field, such as Cognitive Neuroscience, Biomedical Imaging, Psychology, or Communication Sciences and Disorders (by the start date) OR a clinical degree plus extensive relevant research experience.
  • Substantial experience in the analysis of functional and/or structural MRI data.
  • Ability to develop and implement innovative imaging analyses to address novel questions.
  • A strong record of research productivity.
  • A strong publication record.
  • Excellent programming skills.
  • Experience with neurological populations is desirable, but not essential.
  • Experience with language and/or aphasia research is desirable, but not essential.

At level B, candidates should demonstrate:

  • Evidence of leadership in producing research outputs.
  • Leadership of funding applications or other external mechanisms of research support.
  • A more extensive record of achievement in supervision outcomes.
